IEEE Magnetics Society Summer School

University of Colorado at Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs, CO
Aug. 3-8, 2008

The first annual IEEE Magnetics Society Summer School will be held on the campus of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs August 3 – 8, 2008. The school is designed for graduate students studying magnetism and related areas. It will consist of lectures by international experts and will include poster presentations by participating graduate students. The program will cover fundamentals, nanomagnetism, theory and modeling, magnetotransport, magnetic recording, future recording concepts, spin dynamics, ultrafast switching, and advanced characterization.
Support will be provided for approximately 50 students. Awardees will be provided with free room and board and will be reimbursed for most of the cost of economy round trip airfare (or equivalent ground transportation). A limited number of additional students may be accepted with reduced or no financial support. Applications will be considered from any geographical area. Participants must currently be MS or PhD students studying basic or applied magnetics.

Application

Students must submit a completed application form to Bob Camley at ieeesumr@uccs.edu. A recommendation from the student’s advisor is required and should also be e-mailed to ieeesumr@uccs.edu. If the advisor is not a member of the IEEE Magnetics Society, then the endorsement of an IEEE Magnetics Society member is also required.
Applicants must be a member of the IEEE Magnetics Society. Information on student membership can be found at http://www.ieee.org/go/join_student. Student rates are reasonable and half-year membership for the current year is available after March 1.

Important Dates

March 21, 2008: Deadline for submitting application and recommendation(s).
April 18, 2008: Applicants will be notified of acceptance.
May 2, 2008: Deadline for students to confirm attendance. (All places not confirmed by May 2 will be offered to the next person on the waiting list.)
August 3 – 8, 2008: Summer School.
