Travel to Assisi

Students, please make your own travel arrangements to Assisi by economy class flight or train. You will be reimbursed by the Summer School up to the limit indicated on your acceptance letter. To claim your reimbursement you will need to bring all relevant receipts with you to the summer school. Your expenses will only be reimbursed if you attend all of the summer school events. You can help us support more students in the future by keeping your travel costs as low as possible.

How to get to the summer school

The Summer School will be held at La Cittadella Hotel in the center of Assisi (see map below).

Located at halfway between Rome and Florence, Assisi can be easily reached by car through highway connection. Assisi is also around two hours by train from Rome and Florence. Perugia is a short direct journey away (25 km), by bus or train.

Depending on your port of arrival in Italy, please follow the directions below to get to the hotel.

From Rome “Leonardo da Vinci” Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) to Assisi

1. After clearing customs and baggage claim, follow signs to the train  terminal inside the airport.
   
2. Purchase a ticket to Assisi station from the ticket center or a  ticket machine (cost 18-24 euro). While buying the ticket, please check if you have to change train in Roma Termini or in Roma Tiburtina.
   
3. Stamp the tickets at the stamping machines and board the train towards Roma Termini  or  the train towards Roma Tiburtina. Travel time aprox. 45 minutes
   
4. Change train at Roma Termini (or at Roma Tiburtina).
5. Board train towards Assisi, travel time aprox. 2 hours. Please note that the final destination of the train is either Perugia (Assisi is one on the same line, a couple of stops before Perugia) or Ancona (in this case you have to change train in Foligno, after about 1 hour and a half from Rome). 
   
6. Get off at Assisi  station.  (Follow directions at the bottom of this page to get to the hotel.)

From Rome “Ciampino” Airport (CIA) to Assisi

1. After clearing customs and baggage claim, follow signs to the BUS Terminal.
   
2. Purchase a ticket to Roma Termini train station (cost about 6 Euro).
   
3. At Roma Termini, purchase a ticket to Assisi station from the ticket center or a  ticket machine (cost 10-20 Euro).
   
4. Stamp the tickets at the stamping machines and board train to Assisi, travel time aprox. 2 hours. Please note that the final destination of the train is either Perugia (Assisi is one on the same line, a couple of stops before Perugia) or Ancona (in this case you have to change train in Foligno, after about 1 hour and a half from Rome).  
5. Get off at Assisi  station. (Follow directions at the bottom of this page to get to the hotel.)
   

From Florence Airport “Amerigo Vespucci” (FLR) to Assisi

1. After clearing customs and baggage claim, follow signs to the BUS Terminal. Purchase a ticket (cost 4,5 Euro) on the Bus shuttle which links the Airport to the “Santa Maria Novella” train Station. 
2. At Santa Maria Novella Station, purchase a ticket to Assisi station from the ticket center or a  ticket machine (cost 10-15 Euro). Stamp the tickets at the stamping machines and board train to Assisi, travel time aprox. 2 hours. The best solution is to take a train with final destination Foligno (Assisi is one on the same line, a couple of stops before Foligno).  In other case, you can take a train to Terontola and change train to Assisi.
3. Get off at Assisi  station. (Follow directions at the bottom of this page to get to the hotel.)

From Pisa “Galileo Galilei” Airport (PSA) to Assisi

1. After clearing customs and baggage claim, follow signs to the BUS Terminal.
2. Purchase a ticket (cost 6 Euro) on the Bus shuttle which links the Pisa Airport to the main  train Station of Florence “Santa Maria Novella”. Alternatively, you can take a train to Florence “Santa Maria Novella” Station from the small train Station which is inside the Pisa Airport (travel time about 1 hour). The ticket can be bought using the ticket machine inside the airport. 
3. At “Santa Maria Novella” Station, purchase a ticket to Assisi station from the ticket center or a  ticket machine (cost 10-15 Euro). Stamp the ticket at the stamping machines and board train to Assisi, travel time aprox. 2 hours. The best solution is to take a train with final destination Foligno (Assisi is one on the same line, a couple of stops before Foligno).  In other case, you can take a train to Terontola and change train to Assisi.
4. Get off at Assisi  station. (Follow directions at the bottom of this page to get to the hotel.)

From Perugia  “San Francesco di Assisi” Airport (PEG) to Assisi

• If you let us know at which time you are arriving using the itinerary form , we will organize a pick-up service. You will find one of the local organizers displaying a poster with the IEEE Magnetics School logo.
• Otherwise, after clearing customs and baggage claim, exit the aerostation and take a Taxi to Assisi-La Cittadella (travel time about 20 minutes).

From Assisi train Station to La Cittadella Hotel

1. Take the Bus just outside the Station to reach the city center. The cost of the ticket is 1 Euro if you buy it within the station, 1.5 Euro on board.  
2. You need to stamp the ticket using the machine on board.
3. Get off at Assisi-Piazza San Pietro (travel time about 5 minutes). 
4. Walk under the San Pietro Arch and 300 m along Via Borgo San Pietro, until you will find La Cittadella on your left.
